We have been providing mechanical design resource to Bombora who are developing a wave energy converter. It is a subsea device which uses flexible membranes stretched over cells filled with air. The membranes are moved by the pressure of the waves passing over the top of the device. Using a system of one-way valves this causes air to be pumped along ducts to drive a turbine and generate electricity. We designed a 1/3 scale model of a cell module for use in testing and have also been involved in various parts of the full-scale machine over the last two years. The machine is approximately 800 Tonnes and 75 metres long
